Sylvan Environmental

Sylvan Environmental delivers science-backed ecosystem insights for responsible land management in Tropical North Queensland, Australia.

Close-up, photographic realism of a moss-covered rock beside a clear mountain stream, showcasing intricate ecosystem micro-details. The rock’s surface is textured with multiple moss species in varied greens, tiny ferns, and delicate lichens, while crystal-clear water flows around smooth pebbles, refracting light. Soft morning sunlight filters through an unseen canopy, creating dappled highlights on the moss and subtle motion-blur streaks in the water. The composition uses shallow depth of field so the rock and immediate surrounding habitat are in razor-sharp focus while the background stream and banks dissolve into a gentle bokeh. The mood is calm, precise, and observant, evoking scientific fieldwork and careful ecological study, with a clean, natural, professional aesthetic aligned to a science-backed environmental consulting brand.

Dr Alexander Cheesman – Founder, Sylvan Environmental

Alexander is a tropical plant ecophysiologist, soil scientist and global change biologist with over two decades of field and laboratory research across some of the world’s most complex and threatened ecosystems.

His work spans multiple scales — from leaf-level physiology and soil biogeochemistry to ecosystem carbon cycling, water quality and nutrient dynamics — examining how tropical systems respond to interacting pressures including rising temperature, atmospheric CO₂, drought and air pollution. He combines tropical forest field studies with controlled-environment experiments and process-based modelling to generate insight that is both scientifically rigorous and practically relevant and has worked extensively across tropical wetlands, forests and degraded landscapes in Australia, Panama and beyond
